EAST CONCHO VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

East Concho Volunteer Fire Department was founded in March of 1999. It was established after a two-story log home owned by Randy and Norma Hooker burned to the ground in October of 1991. A large grass fire almost burned three mobile homes in 1998. The fires were just outside of San Angelo in the overlap of the Mereta, Wall and Quail Valley fire districts, which is now the area covered by East Concho VFD. After these incidents, it was apparent to home owners in the area that it was up to them to start and maintain some kind of fire protection. This area also includes Veribest and Riverwood in Tom Green County.

Quail Valley Volunteer Fire Department loaned East Concho VFD its first fire truck until it could be paid for. The truck was a 1964 International with the capability to carry 1,000 gallons of water. The Texas Forest Service also loaned a truck – a 1976 1 ton 4-door Dodge that could carry 300 gallons. Since then, the East Concho VFD has expanded to a total of four trucks – a structural fire engine, two brush trucks and a tanker that can carry up to 5,000 gallons.

The department built a fire station in 2004. The volunteers sponsor various fund-raising events throughout the year and hold business meetings and training for the members twice a month.

East Concho VFD responds to multiple types of fires and related emergencies, including some of the following:
